In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, 62-year-old Maniram Jatav was fatally attacked by a tiger in the border area of Chiklod and Neemkheda in Obedullaganj. The attack occurred while Maniram was out plucking tendu leaves early in the morning. This marks the first recorded incident of a tiger attacking a human in the Bhopal Forest Circle, leading to widespread panic among the local residents.
Upon receiving the report, Forest Department officials, including SDO Sudhir Patle and other personnel, arrived at the scene. Efforts to collect evidence, such as pug marks, proved unsuccessful. The Forest Department has since issued a stern warning to the public to avoid entering the forest. Compensation of Rs. 8 lakh is being provided to Maniram’s family in accordance with government policies.
Maniram Jatav left his home at 6 am to collect tendu leaves in the Neemkheda forest. When he failed to return by noon, around 25-30 villagers initiated a search. They discovered his body later in the evening, revealing a gruesome scene. Maniram’s neck bone was broken, and the lower part of his body had been consumed by the tiger.
Rajesh Khare, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) of the Bhopal Forest Circle, acknowledged the severity of the incident and confirmed it as the first-of-its-kind in the area. He assured that evidence collection is underway to identify the tiger responsible, noting the presence of two tigers in the vicinity.
The incident has left the local community in shock and fear. Maniram’s nephews, Ashok Jatav and Omprakash, recounted their search efforts and expressed concerns over the ongoing collection of tendu leaves despite known tiger activity in the area. They criticized the lack of adequate safety measures, which they believe contributed to the tragedy.
