The construction of the Bailey Bridge over the Kiul River in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district is in its final phase. Once operational, the bridge will significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity between Kiul and Lakhisarai, especially addressing the annual commuting issues faced during the monsoon season. The bridge, a crucial development initiative, was announced by Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar during his Pragati Yatra, and the project has since moved forward swiftly with the cooperation of the Railways.
Bridge to Be Built on Old Railway Foundation, Avoids Land Acquisition
Unlike conventional infrastructure projects, this Bailey Bridge is being constructed on the foundation of an old railway bridge, which avoids the need for land acquisition—cutting down on both cost and time. In addition, footpaths on both sides of the bridge are being planned to accommodate pedestrians, adding further convenience.
A Solution to Monsoon-Time Disruption
Currently, residents rely on walking alongside a railway bridge or using a temporary structure for small vehicles. However, during the rainy season, these makeshift solutions collapse, forcing people to take long detours. The Bailey Bridge promises to permanently resolve these difficulties, ensuring year-round access.
Technical Advantages of a Bailey Bridge
Bailey Bridges are modular structures made by interlocking steel panels, making them quick and easy to install. The absence of a need for heavy machinery and the complex conditions of the river crossing area made an RCC bridge impractical, but a Bailey Bridge emerges as a technically sound and time-efficient alternative.
Political Significance Ahead of State Elections
Beyond infrastructural benefits, the bridge carries political significance. Coming ahead of the assembly elections later this year, the project is being viewed as a strategic move by the government to solidify its presence and popularity in Lakhisarai and surrounding regions. It may bolster the government’s image as proactive and responsive to local issues.
Way Ahead
The near-completion of the Bailey Bridge in Lakhisarai is expected to bring long-awaited relief to the local population, transforming a chronic transportation bottleneck into a smooth commute. It reflects the state government’s commitment to infrastructure development, while also potentially playing a role in the upcoming electoral landscape.
