Patna: Bihar has witnessed an unprecedented surge of applications for newly created government positions, with nearly 9.8 lakh candidates applying for just 935 Assistant Education Development Officer (AEDO) vacancies. The recruitment, conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), has set a record for the highest number of applications ever received for any examination in the state.
AEDO Role and Responsibilities
The AEDO post has been introduced under the Bihar government’s ambitious plan to provide employment to 10 million youth over the next five years. The AEDO will be responsible for monitoring and implementing government education policies at the Panchayat and Block levels, taking over responsibilities previously handled by Block Education Officers (BEOs). Each AEDO will oversee education-related work across nine to ten Panchayats, ensuring policy compliance and effective monitoring of school activities.
Exam and Selection Process
The BPSC will conduct the AEDO examination in January 2026, followed by document verification and a medical examination before final appointments. Rajesh Kumar Singh, BPSC Examination Controller, confirmed, “980,000 candidates have applied for 935 positions.” He added that a detailed notification on exam modalities, dates, and schedules will be released on the BPSC website in December.
Political Reactions
The overwhelming response has triggered political debate in Bihar. Opposition leaders have criticized the NDA government, claiming that rising unemployment remains unaddressed. RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed stated, “The government has destroyed the hopes of youth. Jobs are being eliminated instead of being created. Promises made during campaigns have not been fulfilled.”
Government Defends Recruitment Drive
In response, the BJP defended its employment initiatives. Spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said, “The NDA government is committed to creating 10 million jobs over the next five years. Departments have already started processes to fill vacancies at the earliest.”
Implications
The massive response to the AEDO recruitment reflects the intense demand for secure government employment among Bihar’s youth. With only 935 positions for nearly 9.8 lakh applicants, the competition is expected to be intense. The recruitment drive has now become a focal point of discussions on employment, governance, and youth welfare in Bihar.
