Oil India Signs MoU with CSIR-IMMT to Boost R&D in Critical Minerals under NCMM

Partnership Aims to Strengthen India’s Strategic Mineral Capabilities for Energy Transition, Defence, and Advanced Technologies

New Delhi: Oil India Limited (OIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT) to undertake collaborative research and development projects in the field of critical minerals. The partnership aligns with the objectives of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) and aims to strengthen India’s strategic capabilities in securing essential mineral resources.

Focus on Collaborative Research for Critical Minerals

The MoU will facilitate joint R&D initiatives in areas related to critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, in line with the priorities of NCMM. The collaboration is expected to enhance technical capabilities in exploration, processing, and utilization of critical minerals, supporting India’s energy transition and technology development goals.

Signing Ceremony and Leadership Presence

The agreement was signed by OIL’s Director (Exploration & Development) and the Director of CSIR-IMMT. The ceremony was attended by the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Oil India, along with functional directors, senior officials, and scientists from both organizations.

CSIR-IMMT has been designated as a Centre of Excellence for critical minerals under the NCMM, reflecting its pivotal role in advancing research and innovation in this strategic domain.

Role of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM)

The NCMM is a government initiative aimed at securing India’s access to critical minerals essential for sectors such as clean energy, electronics, defence, and electric mobility. The mission promotes:

  • Domestic exploration, mining, processing, and recycling of critical minerals
  • Research and development initiatives
  • International partnerships and private sector participation

By prioritizing key minerals, NCMM aims to reduce import dependence, strengthen supply chains, and support India’s long-term industrial growth and strategic security objectives.
