In a significant pre-election announcement, Bihar Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar has declared a substantial increase in the monthly pension amount for widows, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities under the Social Security Pension Scheme. The pension, which was earlier Rs 400 per month, will now be raised to Rs 1,100 per month, effective from July 2025.
Pension Hike to Benefit Over One Crore Beneficiaries
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Mr. Kumar stated, “I am happy to announce that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, widows, elderly and differently-abled persons will now get a pension of Rs 1,100 per month instead of Rs 400. All beneficiaries will get pension at the increased rate from the month of July. It will be ensured that this amount is sent to the account of all beneficiaries on the 10th of each month. This will benefit 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries.”
He further added that senior citizens are an invaluable part of society and ensuring their dignified living remains a top priority for the state government. Mr. Kumar reaffirmed that the Bihar government will continue to work in the direction of inclusive and equitable welfare.
A Strategic Move Before Bihar Elections
The announcement is being seen as a politically strategic move ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The opposition had been frequently targeting the government on issues of public welfare, especially regarding pensions for economically vulnerable groups.
By more than doubling the pension amount, the Nitish Kumar-led government aims to provide substantial relief to the poor, elderly, widowed, and disabled, thereby boosting its pro-people image. The decision is expected to positively impact millions of families, particularly in rural and underprivileged areas.
The move is also likely to influence the electoral landscape by directly addressing the needs of a large segment of the population that has long demanded a revision in the pension structure.
