Darbhanga: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Bihar continues to push forward its agenda for industrial development and rural employment. In a major boost to the state’s cottage industry, construction work has begun on a Khadi Mall cum Urban Haat in Sarmohanpur, Darbhanga.
The project is being developed by the Bihar State Khadi Village Industries Board at an estimated cost of ₹29.31 crore, with a targeted completion timeline of 18 months.
Khadi Mall with a Modern Twist
Unlike existing Khadi malls in Patna and Muzaffarpur, and the upcoming one in Purnia, the Darbhanga facility will be a first-of-its-kind integrated Khadi Mall and Urban Haat with several modern amenities:
- Khadi Experiential Centre
- Rooftop restaurant
- Beautified pond area
- Urban Haat Memorial
- Food court
- Modern commercial complex
This unique blend of heritage promotion and urban retail infrastructure aims to provide both shopping and cultural experiences to visitors.
Big Boost for Local Artisans and Handicrafts
The project aims to become a central hub for Khadi, local artwork, paintings, and handicrafts, offering a dedicated market for artisans and small producers to showcase and sell their products.
Local producers will not only be able to set up shops inside the mall but will also have the opportunity to sell Khadi materials directly to the mall management.
“This initiative will empower rural entrepreneurs and artisans by providing them direct access to the market,” said a senior official from the Industry Department.
Employment Opportunities: Over 1,200 Jobs Projected
According to early estimates, the project will create 250+ direct jobs in the mall, including roles in management, retail, hospitality, and maintenance. Additionally, it is expected to generate over 1,000 indirect employment opportunities through ancillary services, supply chains, and artisan networks.
AIDA Officials Inspect Site Progress
Recently, officials from AIDA (Agency for Industrial Development Authority) visited the construction site to assess the on-ground progress and design compliance. The project is being closely monitored to ensure timely execution.
What It Means for Bihar
This development is a part of the larger push by the Bihar government to revive Khadi and handloom-based industries while modernizing traditional retail spaces. It also aligns with the Make in India and Vocal for Local initiatives by providing sustainable livelihoods to artisans.
With Bihar gaining a reputation for policy-led industrial growth, the Khadi Mall cum Urban Haat in Darbhanga is set to become a landmark initiative, blending tradition with opportunity.
