The political atmosphere in Bihar has reached a boiling point with the first phase of the 2025 Assembly elections. A major controversy erupted in Lakhisarai when the convoy of Deputy Chief Minister and BJP candidate Mr. Vijay Kumar Sinha came under attack. Stones, mud, cow dung, and shoes were reportedly hurled at his vehicle while he was inspecting polling booths in the Ramgarh Chowk police station area.

Following the incident, Mr. Sinha accused Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supporters of orchestrating the attack to intimidate voters from the Backward Classes. The incident has not only intensified the political battle but has also drawn public attention to the role of district police leadership – particularly that of Superintendent of Police (SP) Mr. Ajay Kumar.

Deputy CM’s Strong Words: “SP is Weak and Cowardly”

The Deputy Chief Minister, visibly angered, accused the local administration of failing to ensure voter safety. Mr. Sinha called Lakhisarai SP Mr. Ajay Kumar “weak and cowardly,” alleging that the police allowed RJD goons to disrupt the polling process. He warned, “If such lawlessness continues, homes of criminals will be bulldozed. The law will take its course.”

Mr. Sinha claimed that voters at booths 404 and 405 were being threatened and driven away. Following the chaos, Mr. Sinha staged a protest that was later called off after the intervention of Mr. Ajay Kumar and the District Magistrate, who assured strict action.

Election Commission Takes Action, Police Deployment Strengthened

The Election Commission of Bihar promptly took note of the incident. The Director General of Police (DGP) has been instructed to identify the culprits and ensure that no voter intimidation takes place in the next phases of polling. In view of heightened tension, additional police forces have been deployed in sensitive areas of Lakhisarai to maintain peace and voter confidence.

Who is Mr. Ajay Kumar, SP of Lakhisarai?

Mr. Ajay Kumar is a 52-year-old Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Bihar. A B.Tech graduate in Production Engineering, he began his career in the Bihar Police as part of the State Police Service (SPS) before being promoted to the IPS on December 22, 2023.

He assumed charge as the 33rd Superintendent of Police of Lakhisarai on October 15, 2024, succeeding Mr. Pankaj Kumar. Known for his disciplined approach, Mr. Kumar has previously handled several key policing assignments in the state and is recognized for his balanced handling of law and order challenges.

Administrative Leadership and Policing Vision

As SP of Lakhisarai, Mr. Ajay Kumar oversees law and order, crime prevention, police station management, and community policing initiatives. His tenure has seen initiatives aimed at improving police-public relations and enhancing safety infrastructure.

He is known for personally inspecting police lines and confidential branches, where he emphasized the importance of updating women’s helplines and increasing accountability. His administrative record reflects a focus on transparency, responsiveness, and institutional reform – all crucial for maintaining stability during a politically charged election season.

Notable Policing Achievements

Under Mr. Kumar’s leadership, the district police achieved a significant success with the surrender of a Maoist commander before the Lakhisarai Police and the Special Task Force (STF). His active engagement in anti-insurgency and infrastructure reviews highlights his operational efficiency.

According to official civil service records, Mr. Kumar is positioned at Level 11 in the Bihar IPS seniority scale. His current posting underscores the trust of the state government in his ability to handle complex law-and-order situations.

Governance and Development Focus

The role of district-level police leadership like Mr. Ajay Kumar’s goes beyond crime control. It contributes directly to governance and development by fostering a secure environment for social and economic activities. His focus on police modernization, public cooperation, and prompt response mechanisms aligns with Bihar’s broader administrative reforms in public safety and governance.

In a district balancing rural sensitivities, political volatility, and insurgent threats, Mr. Kumar’s leadership is vital for maintaining harmony and ensuring democratic integrity during the election season.

The Road Ahead: Law, Order, and Public Trust

As the election progresses, all eyes remain on how the Lakhisarai administration handles law and order under SP Mr. Ajay Kumar’s command. His ability to balance political sensitivities with effective policing will play a defining role in restoring confidence among voters and ensuring peaceful elections.
