Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, while addressing the Makhana Festival at Gyan Bhawan near Gandhi Maidan, lauded Bihar’s rapid agricultural development, describing it as nothing short of a revolution. He released the “Makhana: Culture to Prosperity” report alongside Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Mr. Vijay Sinha, calling makhana a “boon for the poor” and a symbol of Bihar’s agricultural strength.
Makhana Cultivation Expands Over Tenfold
Highlighting a sharp growth trajectory, Mr. Chouhan noted that makhana cultivation has expanded from 3,000 hectares to nearly 40,000 hectares in recent years. This transformation has positioned Bihar as India’s leading makhana-producing state, now gaining international recognition. The Union Minister urged local youth to launch startups in the makhana value chain, assuring full support from the Central Government.
Centre’s Push to Globalize Bihar’s Superfood
“Our goal is to see makhana on dining tables across the world while boosting farmer incomes,” said Mr. Chouhan. The Union Government aims to leverage agri-export policies, value-addition support, and startup ecosystem incentives to make Bihar a global player in niche agricultural exports.
MSP Assurances for Pulses and More
Mr. Chouhan reiterated the central government’s commitment to purchase Bihar’s agricultural produce—including lentils, black gram, and pigeon pea—at the announced Minimum Support Prices (MSPs). This assurance comes as a relief to farmers seeking price stability in the Rabi season.
Rabi Workshop and Advisor Dialogue for Agri Policy Strengthening
The Minister also addressed the Rabi Workshop and Agricultural Advisor Dialogue, engaging with scientists, advisors, and farmers. Emphasizing the role of agricultural advisors as the bridge between research labs and rural fields, Mr. Chouhan stated that the government is committed to safeguarding their rights and recognizing their contributions.
Focus on Pulses and Maize Production in Bihar
Mr. Chouhan stressed Bihar’s untapped potential in pulses and maize production, calling for focused interventions and farmer-friendly policies to improve productivity and enhance income. He described agriculture as central to India’s growth story under Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Farmers’ Welfare at the Core of National Policy
“India will not compromise on its farmers’ interests. For us, the national interest is paramount,” the Union Minister declared. The event was also addressed by Mr. Vijay Sinha, Principal Secretary Mr. Pankaj Kumar, and other senior officials, reaffirming Bihar’s strategic agricultural plans.
