Patna: Bihar’s traditional agriculture sector is set to get a significant boost with the launch of the ‘Pan Vikas Yojana’, aimed at promoting the cultivation of Magahi Pan, a world-famous variety of betel leaf. The state government is offering a direct subsidy of ₹11,750 to farmers cultivating pan, making this cash crop more profitable and accessible.
Magahi Pan Cultivation Made Profitable
Under the new initiative, farmers in 12 selected districts of Bihar can start pan cultivation on just 100 square meters and avail the government subsidy of up to ₹11,750. The scheme is designed to reduce farmers’ production costs while turning Magahi Pan into a branded product globally.
The districts covered under the scheme include Aurangabad, Gaya, Nalanda, Nawada, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, and six others, chosen for their favorable agro-climatic conditions for pan cultivation.
Accessible to All Farmers
A notable feature of the scheme is its flexibility in land ownership. Farmers do not need to own land to apply; those cultivating on rented land can also benefit by submitting a formal agreement (ikararnama). This approach ensures wider participation and encourages more farmers to enter pan cultivation.
Transparent Selection Process
To ensure fairness, the government will select beneficiaries through a lottery system, eliminating any bias and giving equal opportunities to all applicants. This system guarantees that genuinely deserving farmers can benefit from the subsidy.
How to Apply
Interested farmers can apply via the official website of the Department of Horticulture, Bihar. The application requires basic documents including:
- Aadhaar card
- Land ownership proof or rental agreement
- Bank account linked with DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer)
Only one member per family is eligible for the subsidy. Farmers will need to procure saplings and other cultivation materials themselves, after which the government will transfer the subsidy amount of up to ₹11,750 directly into their bank accounts.
Cash Crop Potential for Rural Economy
While profits from traditional crops are declining, cash crops like Magahi Pan act as a “cash ATM” for farmers. With its distinct taste and global recognition, Magahi Pan cultivation under this modern government scheme offers new business opportunities, alongside traditional farming income, thereby strengthening the rural economy.
Bihar’s Vision for Magahi Pan
The government’s vision is clear: transform Magahi Pan into a branded product while empowering farmers economically. By combining traditional farming practices with modern support mechanisms, the Pan Vikas Yojana aims to provide both profitability and sustainability for the state’s agricultural sector.
