Patna: Bihar has achieved a major milestone in the fisheries sector by recording 9.59 lakh tonnes of fish production in the financial year 2024–25, marking a significant boost to the state’s agricultural and allied economy. The achievement reflects nearly 10 per cent growth in fish production within a year, driven by sustained efforts of the state government’s Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources Department.
With this performance, Bihar has secured the fourth position nationally in freshwater fish production, reinforcing its status as one of India’s leading fish-producing states.
Fish Production Doubles Over the Last Decade
According to official data, fish production in Bihar has nearly doubled over the past decade, showing an increase of around 100 per cent between 2014–15 and 2024–25. In 2013–14, Bihar ranked ninth in the national fish production chart, but rapid growth helped the state move to fourth place by 2023–24.
Despite climatic challenges such as extreme heat and cold for several months each year, Bihar has shown consistent and stable progress in the fisheries sector.
Scientific Methods Drive Growth
The state has outperformed several regions with more favourable geographical conditions by adopting scientific fish farming techniques. Special focus has been placed on developing fisheries in water-scarce plateau districts through modern technologies such as scientifically designed ponds, Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS), and biofloc technology.
So far, 7,575.12 hectares have been developed using scientific pond construction methods, incorporating water quality management, aeration systems, and high-density fish farming practices to boost productivity.
Expansion of Biofloc and RAS Technologies
Biofloc technology has emerged as a key driver of growth, enabling higher fish production in limited space at lower cost. A total of 764 biofloc units have been installed across the state, allowing farmers to maximise output with minimal water use.
In addition, the adoption of advanced RAS technology has enabled up to 90 per cent water savings, while supporting high-density fish cultivation, making fish farming viable even in areas facing water scarcity.
Government Support Strengthens Fisheries Sector
Officials said the continued support of the Bihar government, combined with technology-driven interventions and farmer participation, has played a crucial role in transforming fisheries into a strong income-generating sector. The progress is also expected to contribute to rural employment, nutritional security, and overall economic growth in the state.
