Patna: In a major step toward reducing air pollution, the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) has expanded its fleet of clean and environment-friendly buses. The initiative has resulted in nearly 30 per cent reduction in transport-related pollution across the state.
At present, BSRTC is operating 884 buses, of which 366 are CNG-based and 25 are electric buses (e-buses), providing commuters with affordable, cleaner, and sustainable transport options.
Significant Reduction in Fuel Use and Carbon Emissions
The introduction of electric buses has led to substantial environmental benefits. According to BSRTC data, the e-bus fleet has helped save approximately 25.67 lakh litres of diesel so far.
This transition has also reduced 6,778 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing significantly to improved air quality. Compared to traditional diesel buses, both CNG and electric buses have shown marked reductions in air pollution and carbon emissions.
Expansion of Electric Bus Fleet Under PM E-Bus Scheme
Under the PM E-Bus Seva Yojana, Bihar is set to receive around 400 new electric buses in the near future. The expansion will further reduce dependence on diesel and conventional fuels, lower the state’s carbon footprint, and promote clean, quiet, and eco-friendly public transport in urban and semi-urban areas.
Focus on Green Infrastructure at Bus Depots
BSRTC is also focusing on developing green infrastructure across its facilities. At least 30 per cent of the area in 17 bus depots and bus stands is being developed as green zones.
These initiatives include large-scale tree plantation, green belts, solar-powered street lighting, energy-efficient building illumination, and environmentally friendly design practices. These measures are expected to reduce air and noise pollution while improving the overall commuter experience.
Charging Infrastructure for Sustainable Mobility
To support the growing e-bus fleet, BSRTC plans to establish charging infrastructure in a phased manner across the state. This will ensure smooth operations and strengthen Bihar’s transition toward a modern, sustainable, and environmentally responsible public transport system.
