In a startling incident that unfolded in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district, traffic policemen attempted to extort a bribe from an IPS officer, unaware of his identity. The officer, who was in plain clothes and traveling on the Jaipur highway, was stopped by the traffic personnel under the pretext of a traffic violation. The situation quickly escalated when the policemen began demanding a bribe to let the vehicle pass.
The incident took place on June 14 when the IPS officer was commuting along Jaipur Road in a private vehicle without police insignia. The traffic policemen, unable to recognize him, reportedly threatened action for alleged violations and sought money to let the vehicle go.
However, the tables turned when the officer calmly revealed his identity. Realizing their blunder, the policemen panicked, apologized profusely, and even reportedly fell at the officer’s feet in an attempt to seek forgiveness.
SP Kavendra Singh Sagar Takes Swift Action
The episode caused widespread buzz in Bikaner on Friday, especially given the frequent complaints of illegal extortion by traffic personnel. Once the matter reached Superintendent of Police Mr. Kavendra Singh Sagar (2015-batch IPS officer), swift disciplinary action was taken. Four policemen involved in the incident, including a traffic constable and three other constables, were immediately sent to the police lines pending inquiry.
The incident has reignited concerns over corruption within the traffic department and the urgent need for internal accountability and reform.
