Chandigarh: In a key administrative move, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed IPS officer Pushpendra Kumar (2006 batch, AGMUT cadre) as the acting Director General of Police (DGP) of Chandigarh. He will hold the position as an additional charge until further orders.

The post of Chandigarh DGP became vacant following the transfer of IPS Rajkumar Singh to Delhi. Singh had earlier taken over as acting DGP after the transfer of Surendra Yadav in April 2025.

From Delhi to Chandigarh: A Steady Rise
Mr Kumar was transferred from Delhi to Chandigarh on May 30, 2025, and officially took charge as the Inspector General (IG) of Chandigarh Police in June. His promotion to acting DGP marks a swift rise in local law enforcement leadership.

Before his Chandigarh posting, Mr Kumar served as the Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) in Delhi Police. With years of experience across various high-responsibility roles, Kumar is known for his decisive leadership and administrative acumen.

A Background of Service and Experience
A 2006-batch officer of the AGMUT cadre, Mr Kumar has held several key positions in the Delhi Police. His appointment as the acting DGP in Chandigarh is seen as a continuation of his dedicated service within the Indian Police Service.

Chandigarh administration sources indicate that Kumar’s additional charge may continue until a full-time DGP is appointed or further orders are issued.

What’s Next for Chandigarh Police
With Pushpendra Kumar at the helm, Chandigarh Police is expected to maintain focus on law and order, public safety, and administrative continuity. His tenure comes at a time when the city continues to address urban policing challenges, traffic management, and community engagement.

The Home Ministry’s appointment reflects confidence in Kumar’s capability to lead the police force effectively during this transitional phase.
