In a groundbreaking move to combat deforestation and restore biodiversity, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has unveiled a pioneering reforestation initiative in collaboration with the Forest Department in Nashik. This transformative project, announced on Tuesday, aims to rejuvenate degraded lands in the Nashik District of Maharashtra using cutting-edge drone technology and innovative seedball deployment strategies.
BPCL’s initiative is set to deploy 200,000 seedballs across remote and inaccessible areas, targeting critical zones impacted by rapid deforestation and land degradation.
The project spans 100 hectares across three forest ranges: Sinnar Nashik Range, Hivre Village, and Ganga Mahalungi Village. Utilizing GIS mapping for site selection, BPCL aims to enhance local biodiversity and promote ecosystem health by planting a variety of tree species, including Karanja, Neem, Sagwan, Indian Rosewood, Khair, Black Plum, and Mango.
Key components of the initiative include community engagement, seedball production involving local residents, and the use of seedcopter drones for efficient deployment. Advanced monitoring systems will track reforestation progress, ensuring the effectiveness of restoration efforts.
Beyond environmental restoration, the project seeks to empower local communities through training and employment opportunities in sustainable practices. By integrating scientific research, technological innovation, and community participation, BPCL aims to establish a scalable reforestation model that can be replicated in other regions facing similar environmental challenges.
This initiative aligns with BPCL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focus on environmental sustainability, reflecting the company’s dedication to creating a positive impact on society. Through initiatives like this, BPCL continues to demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship, contributing significantly to the greening of Nashik District and enhancing the livelihoods of its residents.
