New Delhi: In a powerful recognition of courage and operational brilliance, the government has conferred gallantry awards on 36 Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel for their roles in Operation Sindoor. The announcement, made ahead of Independence Day celebrations, includes nine Vir Chakras—the nation’s third-highest wartime gallantry medal—awarded to fighter pilots and officers who struck terrorist group headquarters in Muridke and Bahawalpur, along with key Pakistan military assets.
Honours Across Ranks and Roles
The honours list features nine Vir Chakras, one Shaurya Chakra, and 26 Vayu Sena Medals. The Shaurya Chakra—India’s peacetime award for courageous action or self-sacrifice not directly involving the enemy—was awarded to one air warrior. The Vayu Sena Medals, recognising exceptional devotion to duty, went to 26 officers for their operational contributions.
Vir Chakra recipients include Group Captains R S Sidhu, Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra; Wing Commander Joy Chandra; Squadron Leaders Sarthak Kumar, Siddhant Singh, Rizwan Malik; and Flight Lieutenant A S Thakur—showcasing the diverse roles and teamwork that enabled operational success.
Operation Sindoor: Swift Retaliation with Strategic Precision
Launched on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, Operation Sindoor targeted nine terrorist facilities deep within Pakistani territory. The strikes eliminated over 100 terrorists, sending a clear message of India’s military resolve and capability to neutralise cross-border threats.
For the first time, the ‘Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal’—India’s highest wartime distinguished service decoration—was conferred upon Air Force officers, marking a historic moment in IAF honours.
Escalation and Counter-Response
Following the strikes, Pakistan retaliated with drone attacks, which were intercepted by Indian air defence units. On May 10, IAF and allied forces launched precision strikes on 11 key Pakistani military and radar sites, further degrading enemy capabilities.
Air Force Chief Air Marshal A P Singh confirmed that Indian forces downed six Pakistani fighter jets and inflicted damage on several F-16 aircraft during the operation, underscoring the tactical dominance of IAF pilots.
National Pride and Military Excellence
The gallantry awards symbolise the bravery, skill, and dedication of the IAF personnel involved in Operation Sindoor. Their actions not only safeguarded national security but also reinforced India’s strategic deterrence.
As the nation marks its 78th Independence Day, these recognitions stand as a tribute to the air warriors who risked their lives to defend the country.
