Mr. Jitendra Kumar, a 1990 batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, passed away on Sunday after a prolonged battle with cancer. Having retired on June 30, 2025, after nearly 35 years of distinguished service, Mr. Kumar was admitted to PGI Lucknow on Friday night when his condition deteriorated. He breathed his last at around 12 noon during treatment, leaving behind a legacy of strong governance, administrative reforms, and development initiatives.
A Career Dedicated to Public Service
Mr. Jitendra Kumar’s journey in the Indian Administrative Service was marked by efficiency, balance, and an unwavering commitment to public welfare. His allocation to the Uttar Pradesh cadre positioned him in one of India’s most challenging yet transformative states. Over the decades, he held several high-impact positions that contributed to the state’s administrative and developmental growth.
Among his key postings were Principal Secretary, General Administration Department (GAD), and Principal Secretary–Tourism with additional charge as Director General (DG) Tourism, Uttar Pradesh. His leadership in these departments brought structural improvements and renewed focus on efficiency in service delivery.
A Leader in Administrative and Developmental Reform
Beyond general administration, Mr. Kumar also steered critical initiatives in reorganisation coordination, language policy, culture, and administrative reforms, helping to streamline governance processes. His experience in managing cross-departmental coordination and promoting cultural development was seen as a hallmark of his administrative acumen.
His elevation to the Apex or Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) scale underscored the trust reposed in him by successive state governments. Under his stewardship, the tourism department was given a fresh direction that sought to highlight Uttar Pradesh’s heritage, religious circuits, and emerging economic opportunities.
Farewell to a Respected Officer
Mr. Kumar’s demise has left the bureaucratic community in mourning. His last rites were performed at Bhaisakund, attended by a large number of senior officers and dignitaries. Those present included former minister Mr. Mohsin Raza, Chief Minister’s advisor Mr. Avnish Awasthi, Chief Secretary Mr. S.P. Goyal, and several Principal Secretaries such as Mr. Deepak Kumar, Mr. Anil Kumar, Dr. Hariom, Mr. Alok Kumar, and Mr. Sunil Chaudhary.
He is survived by his wife Ms. Seema Gupta, two daughters, and a son. Their quiet dignity in the face of loss mirrors Mr. Kumar’s own life—marked by humility, discipline, and service to society.
