Chandigarh: The 100th birthday of J. S. Bawa, a respected former Indian Police Service officer and ex-director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, was celebrated in Chandigarh with great warmth and admiration.
The Tricity IPS (Retd) Fraternity Group organised a special ceremony to honour the veteran officer for his remarkable service to India’s policing system. The celebration brought together several former top police officials from across the country who gathered to recognise Bawa’s decades-long contribution to law enforcement and public service.

A brief but heartfelt function was held on March 7, 2026, at the Punjab Police Officers Institute in Chandigarh. The event was organised by the Tricity IPS (Retd) Fraternity Group to celebrate the 100th birthday of J. S. Bawa.

Senior retired police officers and dignitaries attended the gathering to honour the veteran officer and celebrate his legacy.
During the ceremony, former Haryana Director General of Police S. S. Brar and former Punjab DGP D. S. Mangat presented Bawa with a shawl and bouquet as a token of respect and appreciation for his distinguished career.

- Rishpal Singh, former Special Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, New Delhi
- Dilbagh Singh, former DGP of Jammu and Kashmir
- Baljit Singh Sandhu, former DGP of Haryana
Their presence highlighted the respect and admiration Bawa commands across the police fraternity.
Distinguished Career of IPS officer J. S. Bawa
J. S. Bawa belongs to the 1951 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) from the Punjab cadre. Over the decades, he held several important positions in the police and investigative services.
His most notable role was serving as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India’s premier investigative agency. Bawa led the organisation for five years, a period that contributed significantly to strengthening investigative professionalism.
Throughout his career, he served in senior leadership roles in Punjab and other parts of India, earning a reputation for integrity and dedication.
About the Tricity IPS (Retd) Fraternity Group
The Tricity IPS (Retd) Fraternity Group is a respected association of retired IPS officers based in the Chandigarh Tricity region (Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula).
The group was established in 1986–87 with the aim of maintaining professional and social connections among retired police officers.
Today, the fraternity includes more than 57 members, all of whom have served in senior positions across India’s policing and security institutions.
Notably, J. S. Bawa currently serves as the President of the group, reflecting his continued engagement with the police community even at the age of 100.
