In a landmark moment for Jharkhand’s administrative and policing history, Ms. Tadasha Mishra, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, officially assumed charge as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP-In-Charge) on Friday. With this appointment, she has become the first-ever woman to head the Jharkhand Police.
Ms. Mishra, who earlier served as Special Secretary in the Home, Prisons, and Disaster Management Department, took over the top post following the resignation of former DGP Mr. Anurag Gupta. Her appointment was confirmed through a notification issued by the Home Department on Thursday night.
After assuming charge, Ms. Mishra paid a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Mr. Hemant Soren at his residence office, where she received congratulations and words of encouragement for her new responsibility.
Seasoned IPS Officer with Decades of Service
Originally from Odisha, Ms. Mishra joined the Indian Police Service in 1994 and has built a distinguished career over three decades. She has held several significant posts in both united Bihar and the newly formed Jharkhand state, including City SP of Ranchi, SP of Bokaro, SP of Giridih, DIG Personnel, IG Human Rights, and IG Special Branch.
Known for her composure and firm leadership, Ms. Mishra earned wide respect within the police force for her administrative efficiency, integrity, and commitment to public service.
A Decisive Officer with a Record of Ground-Level Policing
As the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bokaro, Ms. Mishra earned a reputation as a strict yet people-friendly officer. During her tenure, incidents of extortion, kidnapping, and organized crime declined considerably. Her strategies against criminal networks restored peace in the region and boosted public confidence in the police.
She led multiple anti-Naxal operations in difficult terrains such as Jhumra Pahar, demonstrating courage and tactical expertise. Her effective field leadership and prompt decision-making made her one of the most respected officers in the Jharkhand Police cadre.
Welcomed at Police Headquarters with Pride and Hope
Ms. Mishra’s assumption of charge as DGP was met with celebration at the Police Headquarters, where senior officers and staff welcomed her with a bouquet and congratulated her on this historic milestone. Officials described her appointment as a reflection of the government’s commitment to gender equality, professionalism, and merit-based leadership in top administrative positions.
Her colleagues emphasized that her appointment would inspire a new generation of women in law enforcement to aim for leadership roles. Ms. Mishra is set to retire on December 31, 2025, and will serve as DGP (In-Charge) until further orders.
A New Chapter for Policing and Governance in Jharkhand
Under Ms. Mishra’s leadership, the Jharkhand Police is expected to focus on strengthening law and order, improving coordination between security units, and enhancing citizen-police trust, particularly in rural and Naxal-affected areas.
Her appointment marks a significant step forward for inclusive governance, signaling the growing presence of women in India’s highest administrative and policing positions. As Jharkhand’s first woman DGP, Ms. Mishra represents both professional excellence and the progressive evolution of India’s civil services.
