New Delhi: The Government of India on Friday officially approved the appointment of Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak, a senior judge of the Bombay High Court, as the next Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
The decision was formalized through a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice and follows the constitutional process involving the Supreme Court Collegium and the President of India.

The appointment was cleared by the Central Government after the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, recommended Justice Sonak’s elevation on December 18, 2025.

Under Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the Chief Justice of a High Court is appointed by the President of India, acting in consultation with the CJI and the state’s governor.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the development on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that the President had approved the appointment in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Justice Sonak will assume charge as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court after the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice, Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, who is set to demit office on January 8, 2026.

Legal Career Before Judgeship
Justice Sonak enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in October 1988. His early legal practice was primarily at the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court, where he handled a broad array of matters, including:
