Jaipur/New Delhi: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rajeev Kumar Sharma (1990 batch, Rajasthan cadre), currently serving as the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), has been prematurely repatriated to his parent cadre by the central government.
The move comes in line with the Rajasthan government’s decision to appoint him as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs for Sharma’s repatriation with immediate effect.
Assumes Charge as DGP After Meharda’s Retirement
Mr Sharma replaces Ravi Prakash Meharda (IPS:1991:RJ), who had been serving as acting DGP following the retirement of Umesh Mishra in March 2025. Mr Meharda himself retired on June 30, 2025, paving the way for a full-time DGP appointment.
With this appointment, Mr Sharma returns to the Rajasthan cadre after a notable stint at the BPR&D, where he was overseeing national-level policing research and modernization initiatives.
A Seasoned Officer with Strategic Experience
Mr Sharma is regarded as one of Rajasthan’s senior-most and most experienced IPS officers, known for his leadership in various policing domains including law & order, counter-insurgency, training, and institutional development.
His return to the state police in a leadership role is seen as a strategic move by the Rajasthan government to strengthen top-level law enforcement and bring administrative stability.
