New Delhi: Vineel Krishna Ravella, a 2005-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, has been appointed as Joint Secretary in the Department of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

The appointment is part of a broader reshuffle cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), which approved postings of 41 senior officers to various Joint Secretary-level positions across central ministries and departments.

Five-Year Tenure in Sports Ministry
According to an official notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Vineel Krishna will serve in the position for a period of five years from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.

Proven Track Record in Sports & Governance
Currently serving as Commissioner, Land Records and Settlement in Odisha, Mr Krishna has built a strong reputation in public administration and development policy. During his earlier tenure with the Odisha government, he held key posts including:

  • Special Secretary to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik
  • Secretary, Sports and Youth Services Department

In these roles, he played a pivotal part in enhancing Odisha’s sports infrastructure and programs, helping the state gain national recognition as a rising sports powerhouse. Initiatives such as world-class hockey stadiums, youth outreach programs, and talent identification efforts bore his imprint.

Return to National Sports Arena
Mr Krishna’s appointment is seen as a natural extension of his ongoing contribution to India’s sports ecosystem. His experience in building grassroots-level sports infrastructure and executing youth-centric policies is expected to benefit national-level planning and implementation.

Strategic Appointment
As India prepares for upcoming international sporting events and pushes for deeper reforms in athlete development, infrastructure, and sports science, Krishna’s induction into the Ministry is likely to inject domain-specific administrative expertise into policymaking.

His appointment is also being viewed as part of the Centre’s effort to bring in reform-minded officers with proven experience in sectoral transformation at the state level.
