Centre Notifies Rules to Increase Non-IPS Deputation Posts in CBI

The Union Govt brought these changes to enhance the CBI's operational flexibility by broadening its talent pool

The Union Government has revised rules for appointing officers to 122 Superintendent of Police (SP)-level posts in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), raising the number of deputation positions from non-Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from 15 to 18. This move allows the CBI to induct more officers from non-police organizations.

In accordance with the notification issued Wednesday, 50% of SP-level posts in the CBI will now be filled through deputation, with the remainder through promotion. Eligible officers for deputation include those from the Indian Police Service, All India Services, Central Police Organizations, Central Government organized Group ‘A’ Services, and State or Union Territory Police Organizations.

The rules specify that the number of officers from non-IPS services in deputation posts cannot exceed 18, an increase from the earlier cap of 15. Previously, 20% of the 75 deputation posts were reserved for non-IPS officers.

The deputation tenure, including any prior deputation to an ex-cadre post, will typically not exceed four years. These changes aim to enhance the CBI’s operational flexibility by broadening its talent pool.
