New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice BR Gavai on Tuesday called upon Bar Associations across the country to explore innovative ways to financially support young lawyers entering the legal profession, especially those lacking financial security. Speaking at a book launch event organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), the CJI praised the SCBA’s initiative of raising ₹50 crore through CSR funds for a group mediclaim health insurance scheme for Supreme Court lawyers.
“This should become a strong model for all Bar Associations across the country,” CJI Gavai said, emphasizing that “a strong Bar is a foundation of an independent judiciary.”
The CJI used the platform to highlight the critical challenges faced by young legal professionals, particularly those who enter litigation without financial backing. He pointed out that the early years of legal practice are often marked by uncertainty, irregular income, and lack of job security – factors that can discourage bright young minds from continuing in the profession.
“Support Must Extend Beyond Mentorship”
“It is both a professional duty and a moral responsibility of seniors to mentor juniors not just in terms of knowledge and skill but also by providing them the dignity of fair remuneration,” Justice Gavai remarked.
He underlined the importance of creating structured support systems – both financial and professional – to help retain talent in litigation and ensure the sustenance of ethical and independent legal advocacy in the country.
Health Insurance as a Model Support Initiative
CJI Gavai lauded the SCBA for successfully mobilizing ₹50 crore through corporate donations to fund a comprehensive health insurance scheme for Supreme Court lawyers. He described such initiatives as “vital support systems” that provide a degree of financial certainty and peace of mind to practitioners, especially during medical emergencies.
“Providing good healthcare measures is not just financial help; it is a vital support system,” he noted.
The health insurance scheme will cover:
- Pre-existing diseases from day one
- Maternity cover for first two children
- Room rent and ICU charges
- Coverage for family members aged 0 to 90 years
- Several other critical health conditions
Acknowledging Corporate Support
SCBA President and Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal expressed gratitude to several prominent industrialists and business leaders who contributed to the fund. Among the donors were Anil Ambani, Anil Agarwal, Gautam Adani, Mukesh Ambani, Lakshmi Mittal, Chandra from Tata Sons, and the DMR Group.
Celebrating Judicial Legacy
The event also witnessed the release of a special book compiled by the SCBA, which features articles written by young lawyers and reflects on landmark Supreme Court judgments over the last 75 years. Justice Surya Kant, who was also present at the occasion, joined CJI Gavai in commending the SCBA for highlighting the voice of young legal professionals.
