Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made a strong appeal to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to expand IPL representation in the state, citing its massive population of 25 crore and rapidly developing sports infrastructure. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Uttar Pradesh T20 League (UPT20) at the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, the CM emphasized the need to provide a platform for the state’s emerging cricket talent.
“All our athletes should get a platform here in UP. The state is producing good international athletes in many events,” CM Yogi said. “Currently, Uttar Pradesh has only one IPL team, the Lucknow Super Giants, introduced in 2022. I will appeal to the BCCI that there should be at least four teams from UP. The state deserves this opportunity.”
Boosting Cricketing Infrastructure Across the State
CM Yogi also highlighted the government’s efforts to improve sports infrastructure across the state. The Varanasi International Cricket Stadium is nearing completion, while stadiums in Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Meerut, and other districts are either under construction or development. Additionally, mini-stadiums are being established in every development block to ensure that budding athletes have access to training facilities and competitive platforms close to home.
On social media, the CM wrote, “@UPGovt is continuously encouraging emerging players. I have full confidence that with robust infrastructure, the players of the state will perform better in sports. Heartfelt congratulations to all the players and best wishes for a bright future!”
Uttar Pradesh’s Cricketing Potential
Uttar Pradesh has produced several international cricketers, including Suresh Raina, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Rishabh Pant, reflecting the state’s deep talent pool. CM Yogi’s appeal is seen as part of a larger effort to transform UP into a major hub for cricket, providing more opportunities for players to compete at the national and international levels.
With the state government actively promoting sports and the IPL’s growing focus on expanding into new regions, this appeal could potentially lead to the establishment of additional franchises in the coming years. Analysts believe that creating multiple teams in a populous state like Uttar Pradesh would not only boost cricketing opportunities but also contribute significantly to sports tourism and local economic growth.
