In a significant step towards revolutionizing the coal industry, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy inaugurated the state-of-the-art ‘5G Use Case Test Lab’ at the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) in Ranchi on Thursday. This pioneering facility is set to drive digital innovation, providing a platform for the development, testing, and implementation of 5G-enabled applications designed to meet the unique demands of the coal mining sector.

At the event, Reddy highlighted CMPDIL’s role as a trailblazer in leveraging advanced technologies to improve mining operations. He noted that the lab exemplifies the institute’s commitment to enhancing safety, operational efficiency, and sustainability. The lab, designated as a Centre of Excellence by the Ministry of Coal, is a testament to India’s ambitions in adopting cutting-edge technology to address industry challenges.

The inauguration saw the presence of several senior officials, including Coal Ministry Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt, Coal India Limited Chairman P.M. Prasad, and CMPDIL CMD Manoj Kumar. Adding to the ceremony’s highlights, Reddy unveiled a sculpture made from recycled materials that symbolized CMPDIL’s diverse services. The minister also launched the institute’s revamped corporate logo.

The 5G Use Case Test Lab is a microcosm of an industrial 5G private network tailored for coal mining applications. It enables seamless integration of 5G technology with IoT devices and enterprise systems. Beyond conventional communication tools, the lab is equipped to explore advanced applications such as real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and smart mining solutions. Its capabilities extend to high-resolution video processing and deploying augmented and virtual reality tools for enhanced operational management.

By establishing this facility, CMPDIL aims to harness 5G’s potential to transform coal mining into a safer, more efficient, and technologically forward-looking industry. The initiative underscores Coal India Limited’s commitment to using private 5G networks for critical operations, ensuring data security while fostering innovation.
