New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has announced that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Government of India, has approved the extension of tenure of Mr. Madhu Sankunny Nair as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of CSL until his superannuation on January 31, 2026.
Mr. Nair initially assumed charge as CMD on January 1, 2016, and his tenure was previously extended for a second term from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2025. The latest extension reflects the Government’s continued confidence in his strategic leadership and vision for the company.
CMD’s Leadership and Achievements
Under Mr. Nair’s leadership, CSL has achieved several major milestones:
- Transition to a multi-unit company: Expanded operations with seven units across India
- Schedule A CPSE status: Achieved the highest category of Central Public Sector Enterprises
- Stock Exchange Listing: Oversaw the company’s public listing, enhancing transparency and governance
- International Collaborations: Partnered with global technology providers to secure major international orders
- People-First Policy: Fostered a knowledge-driven organizational culture, prioritizing employee development and innovation
Mr. Nair also serves as Chairman of CSL’s wholly-owned subsidiaries, Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited and Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited.

Professional Background and Recognition
Mr. Nair holds a B.Tech in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from Cochin University of Science & Technology and a Master’s in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Osaka University, Japan. He has undergone advanced shipbuilding training at IHI Shipyard, Kure, Japan, and specialized JICA training in Tokyo and Osaka.
Joining CSL as an Executive Trainee in 1988, he brings over 37 years of experience across shipyard management. He is a fellow of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (UK) and the Institution of Naval Architects (India). His contributions have been recognized with awards including:
