New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has been declared the Lowest (L1) bidder in a major defence tender for the construction of five Next Generation Survey Vessels (NGSVs) for the Indian Navy. The estimated total value of the order is around ₹5,000 crore. The final contract award will be subject to completion of necessary formalities, CSL confirmed.
Major Defence Tender Boosts CSL’s Naval Shipbuilding Portfolio
The announcement was made following a meeting at the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi. This development marks a significant milestone for CSL, strengthening its position as a key player in India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding ecosystem.
The company also clarified that neither its promoters nor group entities have any interest in the awarding authority, ensuring the transaction does not fall under related party transactions.

Previous Orders and Strategic Growth
Earlier in January 2026, CSL secured a notable order from domestic client Polestar Maritime Ltd for constructing two Green Tugs of 60 T Bollard Pull Power under the government’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). The tugs are scheduled for delivery in August and September 2027.
CSL classifies a “notable” order as one valued between ₹100–250 crore, reflecting its growing portfolio of strategic domestic projects.
Market Reaction
Following the announcement, Cochin Shipyard shares settled at ₹1,468.20 per share on the BSE, down 0.39% from the previous close of ₹1,473.95. Market analysts expect CSL to remain in focus due to its emerging role in large-scale naval shipbuilding contracts.
