New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s shipbuilding sector, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has secured a mega order from a prominent European client for the design and construction of six LNG-powered feeder container vessels, each with a capacity of approximately 1,700 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units).
The Letter of Intent (LoI) was officially signed on October 14, 2025, marking the beginning of the high-value international contract. A formal shipbuilding agreement, outlining the complete techno-commercial terms, will follow shortly, according to the company’s regulatory filing.
The order is classified as “mega” under CSL’s internal classification system, which denotes contracts exceeding ₹2,000 crore in value.
Environmentally Friendly Vessels Powered by LNG
The new vessels will be fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), making them eco-friendly alternatives to traditional marine fuel-powered ships. These ships are part of a growing global shift toward sustainable and clean maritime transport solutions, especially for short-sea and regional trade routes in Europe.
The order highlights India’s rising reputation in building sophisticated, future-ready vessels that meet stringent global environmental and technical standards.
Market Reaction: CSL Shares Gain After Announcement
Following the announcement, shares of Cochin Shipyard recovered from early losses and were trading 1.1% higher at ₹1,779 on Tuesday. Despite some short-term volatility—down 1.6% over the past month—the stock has gained 14% year-to-date in 2025, underlining investor confidence in the company’s long-term growth and order execution capabilities.
Current Order Book and Strategic Outlook
Cochin Shipyard’s current order book stands at ₹21,100 crore, slightly down from ₹22,500 crore reported at the end of the June quarter of FY 2025. The latest European order is expected to significantly strengthen the company’s export portfolio, which already includes naval vessels, passenger ferries, and offshore platforms.
