New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a leading Defence Public Sector Undertaking, has formally signed shipbuilding contracts with Danish towage giant Svitzer for the construction of four advanced, fully electric TRAnsverse tugs. The agreement, signed on December 5, 2025, follows an earlier Letter of Intent (LOI) and marks a significant milestone in India’s emergence as a global maritime manufacturing hub.
Four Electric Tugs, Option for Four More
Under the newly signed contracts, CSL will construct four 26-metre TRAnsverse 2600E tugs, each designed to deliver 70-ton bollard pull using fully electric propulsion technology. The contract also includes an option for Svitzer to order up to four additional vessels, indicating strong confidence in CSL’s technical capabilities and capacity.
These vessels will be built according to Svitzer’s global specifications, supporting the company’s worldwide fleet renewal programme and its commitment to sustainable maritime operations.
Delivery to Begin in Late 2027
The construction timeline is set so that delivery of the tugs will commence from late 2027. CSL has classified the deal as a ‘significant order’ as per its internal order classification system, highlighting the scale and importance of the project.
