Kolkata — In a clear push to integrate the eastern region into India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, officials convened at the BCC&I Atmanirbhar Bharat Award & Conclave in Kolkata, urging MSMEs from Bengal and neighbouring states to engage more actively.
Only 4–5 Eastern MSMEs Among 80 Projects
Arjun Kumar, Additional Director of DRDO’s Directorate of Technology Development Fund, revealed that out of 80 ongoing indigenous capability projects, just 4–5 involve companies from the eastern region. He called for greater participation from Assam and Bengal, contrasting it with stronger involvement in southern hubs like Hyderabad.
Navy Reinforces Need for Eastern Suppliers
Arunava Bhattacharya, Officer-in-Charge, QAE (Naval), Kolkata, noted the Indian Navy’s “massive shipbuilding spree” and the need to rebuild local vendor networks. He recalled how Bengal MSMEs once supplied key components and reiterated the Navy’s intent to revive that link.
Global Exposure for Local MSMEs
Sushil Mohta, Chairman of World Trade Center (NDITA), announced that WTC will lead a delegation of 20 MSME businesses to participate in Oil & Gas Asia in Kuala Lumpur—marking their entry into international trade platforms.
Record MSME Strength in Bengal
At the event organized by FICCI West Bengal State Council—the 6th edition of ‘Empowering MSMEs for a Sustainable Future’—MSME Secretary Rajesh Pandey highlighted Bengal’s standing:
- Over 9.3 million MSME enterprises
- Highest number of women-led businesses in India
- The Merchant’s Chamber also marked MSME Day with a dedicated seminar.
Why It Matters
- Boosting Indigenous Supply Chains: Increasing eastern participation aligns with defence ecosystem goals under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
- Economic Inclusion: With over 9 million enterprises—many women-led—Bengal has untapped potential for defence manufacturing.
- Global Market Entry: Delegations to international shows signal opportunities for eastern MSMEs in export-oriented defence business.
- Reviving Regional Heritage: Restoring Bengal’s historical vendor role in naval shipbuilding and defence supply chains strengthens national resilience.
