Poonch, Jammu & Kashmir: In a significant security development along the Line of Control (LoC), the Indian Army recovered a bag filled with ammunition and a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) early Thursday in the Chakkan da Bagh area of Khari village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

The consignment is believed to have been dropped by a drone from across the Pakistan border, underscoring persistent cross-border threats and evolving asymmetric tactics in the region.

Details of Poonch Drone Ammo Seizure

According to defence sources, the suspicious package was located between the Rangar Nallah and the Poonch River after Indian Army troops spotted unusual activity amid routine surveillance in the sensitive border area.

The bag contained dozens of live ammunition rounds and a yellow container suspected to be a makeshift improvised explosive device (IED).

Immediately after recovery, the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was deployed to examine and neutralise any potential threat from the components, confirming that the items posed no immediate hazard after controlled analysis.

This incident follows multiple credible reports that a Pakistani-origin drone entered Indian airspace briefly before retreating across the LoC, raising alarm among security officials.

The drone was detected in the Khadi Karmada area of Poonch, where it is reported to have dropped explosives, ammunition, and narcotics, according to additional sources.

Strategic and Security Implications of Poonch Drone Ammo Seizure

The apparent drone intrusion and subsequent recovery of military-grade ammunition in Poonch highlight a growing tactic of remote aerial drops to supply hostile elements in Jammu & Kashmir.

Drone-borne smuggling has become a major concern for Indian security forces, with analysts citing it as a component of hybrid warfare and cross-border terrorism strategies.

Poonch district — located along the international border and the LoC with Pakistan — remains one of the most sensitive security flashpoints. The region has previously witnessed drone sightings, firing incidents, and infiltration attempts.

Joint Search and Surveillance Response in Poonch Drone Ammo Seizure

In response to the drone and ammunition discovery, the Indian Army, along with Jammu & Kashmir Police and other security agencies, has intensified cordon and search operations in the mountainous border terrain.

The forces are canvassing forested areas and vantage points to locate additional contraband or possible militants in the vicinity.

Moreover, the Army’s Romeo Force — along with Special Operations Group (SOG) units — has been conducting elevated search missions over 13,000 feet in the Pir Panjal ranges, even amid harsh winter snowfall and severe cold, as part of a comprehensive push to deter terror activities.

These actions reflect a broader operational stance applied across the Jammu & Kashmir theatre to counter persistent threats, including suspected infiltrations and remote supply deliveries via drones.
