The National Capital Territory of Delhi—India’s capital and a self-governing Union Territory—has undergone a significant administrative restructuring. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the government has officially increased the number of districts from 11 to 13, a move aimed at making governance more efficient and citizen services faster.
A Major Reshuffle in Delhi’s District Structure
Until now, Delhi was divided into 11 districts:
Central, East, New Delhi, North Delhi, North East, North West, Shahdara, South Delhi, South East, South West, and West Delhi.
Under the new framework, three new districts have been created, and one existing district has been abolished.

- Old Delhi
- Central North
- Outer Delhi
- District Abolished
- Shahdara

“What No One Else Did, We Did”: CM Rekha Gupta
Highlighting the importance of the reform, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated:
“This decision to strengthen Delhi’s administrative structure was pending for years, and no government attempted to address it. Our government accomplished this goal in just 10 months. This is a powerful example of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s vision of good governance being implemented.”
The Chief Minister emphasized that the overhaul reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and improved citizen-centric services.
More Subdivisions and Registrar Offices Added
Along with the district reorganization, the government has expanded subdivisions and registrar offices to match the growing administrative needs of the capital city.
Revised Administrative Units
- Districts: 11 → 13
- Subdivisions: 33 → 39
- Sub-registrar offices: 22 → 39
These changes are expected to ease the workload on officials, speed up service delivery, and bring government services closer to residents.
Historical Perspective: How Delhi’s Districts Evolved

- 1997: Delhi was reorganized into 9 districts.
- 2012: The number increased to 11 districts.
- 2025 update: The number has now risen to 13, marking another milestone in the capital’s administrative evolution.
