Mumbai: The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has achieved a significant milestone in the commissioning of the JNPT–Vaitarna section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). On December 22, 2025, Mr. Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, DFCCIL, conducted the first-ever Rail Car Inspection of the newly laid down track from Vaitarna to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), spanning approximately 102 km.
Key Step Towards Commissioning the CTP-11 Stretch
The inspection marks a critical step towards the operational readiness of the CTP-11 stretch, reinforcing DFCCIL’s mission of revolutionizing freight transport in India. The process included a thorough review of:
- Track quality and alignment
- Bridges and other civil structures
- Overhead Equipment (OHE)
- Signalling systems
- Safety protocols and operational standards
This comprehensive evaluation ensures compliance with the highest safety and operational benchmarks, ahead of the commencement of freight operations.

Strategic Importance of the JNPT–Vaitarna Section
The JNPT–Vaitarna section, under the Mumbai Unit of DFCCIL, forms a vital link of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. Once commissioned, it will enable fast, safe, and seamless freight connectivity between major industrial hubs and India’s largest container port, JNPT.
The operationalization of this section is expected to:
- Reduce logistics costs
- Improve supply chain efficiency
- Enhance competitiveness of industrial and trading clusters in the region
Electrification and Progress Update
The Vaitarna–New Kharbao section (30 km) has already been fully electrified, with a successful electric locomotive trial run conducted on November 30, 2025. Remaining electrification and signalling works are progressing swiftly, signaling early readiness for freight operations.
Inspection Team and Stakeholders
The rail car inspection was conducted in the presence of senior DFCCIL officials including:
- Mr. Anurag Sharma, Director (Infrastructure)
- Mr. Sandesh Srivastava, Executive Director (Projects)
- Mr. Vikas Kumar, Chief General Manager (Mumbai)
Additionally, representatives from project contractors M/s EFRC (Tata Projects), M/s L&T, M/s KPIL, and the Project Management Consultant (PMC) were present, ensuring a comprehensive review of the track and associated infrastructure.
