In a major boost to India’s freight transportation network, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has initiated a new phase of logistics expansion in Surat, positioning the city as a critical node in the country’s evolving multimodal freight architecture.
During a high-level visit to major freight terminals on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, DFCCIL Managing Director Praveen Kumar reviewed infrastructure progress, launched new facilities and outlined an integrated logistics framework aimed at enabling faster, economical and seamless freight movement across India.
The visit covered New Udhna, New Makarpura, New Gothangam GCT and New Ankleshwar GCT, where multiple strategic announcements were made relating to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and the upcoming East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor.
New Udhna Becomes Strategic Hub for East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor Planning
A major review meeting was held at New Udhna, where Praveen Kumar assessed progress of the proposed East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor.

The ambitious corridor is planned to connect:
- Dankuni in West Bengal
- Surat in Gujarat
This alignment is expected to directly connect eastern and western industrial zones, improving freight mobility across major production and consumption centres.
East-West Corridor to Link Major Industrial Regions
Under the project framework, the East-West corridor is designed to:
- Reduce freight transit time across industrial belts
- Improve cargo evacuation capacity
- Integrate manufacturing hubs with ports and logistics terminals
- Strengthen long-haul rail freight efficiency
Officials emphasised that Surat’s role is becoming central in this freight strategy due to its industrial and port-linked geography.

Survey Orders Issued for Raipur, Nagpur and Jalgaon
Praveen Kumar directed project teams in:
- Raipur
- Nagpur
- Jalgaon
to immediately begin detailed surveys and land planning.
He instructed officials to:
- Finalise survey alignment
- Coordinate with state governments
- Work with railway divisional headquarters
- Accelerate planning for timely execution
The direction signals formal early-stage implementation of one of India’s most important future freight projects.
Senior DFCCIL Leadership Participates in Surat Review

New Makarpura Gets Modern Track Machine Depot and Tower Wagon Shed
At New Makarpura DFC station, Praveen Kumar inaugurated two key infrastructure facilities:
- State-of-the-art Track Machine Depot
- Tower Wagon Shed
These facilities are designed to improve maintenance readiness and operational reliability across the corridor.
Electric Train Operations Begin at Varnama Container Depot
Electric train operations were also formally started at the Varnama Container Depot.
This is expected to:
- Reduce diesel dependence
- Lower carbon emissions
- Improve freight energy efficiency
- Strengthen green logistics goals
Officials described the move as a significant step toward sustainable freight transportation.
Green Freight Push Gains Momentum
DFCCIL linked the Surat initiatives directly to green logistics goals.
The introduction of electric operations and improved terminal efficiency is expected to support:
- Lower freight emissions
- Reduced congestion on conventional routes
- Better long-haul cargo energy utilisation
This aligns with India’s wider transport decarbonisation goals.

Employee Welfare Projects Also Inaugurated
Alongside freight infrastructure, DFCCIL also inaugurated a landscaped park at Makarpura for employees and their families.
Officials said the initiative reflects attention to:
- Residential quality
- Family welfare
- Child-friendly amenities in railway colonies
The children’s park was specifically appreciated during inspection of the residential colony.
Terminal Capacity Expansion at Gothangam, Ankleshwar and Varnama
Praveen Kumar also inspected freight terminals at:
- New Gothangam GCT (Emirates)
- New Ankleshwar GCT (Savariya Shakti)
- Varnama Terminal operated by Container Corporation of India
Terminal Connectivity Review Ordered
During inspection, he directed teams to strengthen:
- Terminal connectivity
- Yard planning
- Rail integration
- Multimodal cargo handling
Yard Plans to Be Finalised Quickly
Officials were instructed to finalise yard plans in line with railway operational requirements to ensure future freight growth is not constrained.
EWDFC Project Formally Launched in Surat
At the Surat office of GM Coordination, Praveen Kumar formally launched East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor project work.
This marks the administrative beginning of corridor execution planning from the Surat side.
OHE Maintenance Pocket Book Released for Technical Staff
An important technical support publication, the OHE Maintenance Pocket Book, was also released.
The guide is expected to help field staff involved in:
- Overhead equipment maintenance
- Railway electrical systems
- Corridor technical upkeep
Officials described it as a practical field manual for technical operations.

Surat Emerging as a New Freight Power Centre
The combined developments indicate Surat’s rising role in national logistics.
