New Delhi: National AI Skilling Initiative is at the centre of India’s latest push to transform its digital content ecosystem. In a major move, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has launched three key initiatives aimed at boosting the creative economy, improving access to technology, and empowering content creators.

Announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, these initiatives include free AI training for 15,000 creators, a new citizen content platform called MyWAVES, and a major upgrade to DD Free Dish that removes the need for set-top boxes. These steps are designed to make technology more accessible, affordable, and future-ready for India.

National AI Skilling Initiative Explained

The government has launched the National AI Skilling Initiative in partnership with Google and YouTube.

What it offers

  • Free training for 15,000 participants
  • Focus on media, animation, gaming, and digital content
  • Implemented via Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT)

Two-Phase Training Model

Phase 1 (March–June 2026):

  • Basics of AI
  • Prompting skills
  • Generative AI learning

Phase 2 (July–Dec 2026):

  • Advanced hands-on training
  • Tools like AI video, storytelling, and YouTube growth

This initiative aims to make India a global hub for digital content and AI-driven creativity.

MyWAVES Platform: India’s YouTube-like Citizen Creator Hub

The government also launched MyWAVES, a new feature on WAVES OTT.

Key Features

  • Create, upload, and share videos
  • Supports short videos, vertical videos, and series
  • Available in multiple Indian languages
  • Open for all citizens

This marks a shift from content consumption to content creation, giving every Indian a chance to become a creator. It also supports initiatives like the “Create in India Challenge”, boosting local storytelling and talent.

DD Free Dish Upgrade: No Set-Top Box Needed

One of the most impactful changes is in television access.

What’s new

  • TVs with in-built satellite tuners
  • Advanced Electronic Programme Guide (EPG)
  • No need for external set-top boxes

Benefits:

  • Lower cost for households
  • Easy channel browsing
  • Better access in rural and remote areas

This move will expand the reach of public broadcasting and simplify TV viewing across India.
