New Delhi: In a major push towards enhancing digital convenience for metro commuters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has integrated a new UPI-based payment system—BHIM VEGA—into its Sarathi mobile application. The move is aimed at making ticket purchases quicker, smoother, and fully digital, reducing dependency on ticket counters and external payment gateways.
Developed in collaboration with NPCI BHIM Services Ltd (NBSL), the feature enables passengers to register UPI IDs, link their bank accounts or RuPay cards, and complete secure payments directly within the app—without any redirection to third-party platforms.
“With the launch of ‘DMRC Pay powered by BHIM’, we are further simplifying daily ticketing for our passengers. One-click, in-app payments will not only save time but also streamline the entire experience,” said Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC.
Enhanced Digital Integration Across Services
According to DMRC, more than 70% of its seven million daily commuters already use digital ticketing. The new payment integration is expected to further boost this figure while significantly reducing queues at metro stations.
Apart from ticketing, the Sarathi app also now allows:
- Booking for the ‘Jai Hind Sound and Light Show’ at Red Fort with no extra convenience fee
- Integrated ticketing with Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) for seamless multi-line journey planning
- Recharge options for RuPay NCMC cards via digital payment modes
- Bus ticketing through ONDC, allowing users to purchase tickets for DTC, NCRTC, NMRC, and more—all on one platform
“This collaboration with DMRC is a step forward in bringing UPI’s convenience directly into the daily lives of millions of commuters,” said Lalitha Nataraj, MD & CEO of NBSL.
Faster Checkouts & Secure Transactions
The BHIM VEGA solution offers benefits such as:
- Lower transaction failure rates
- Faster checkouts
- High-level security protocols
These improvements are especially valuable in time-sensitive environments like public transport, where ease and speed are critical.
