Dr. Amrita Duhan, known in the Rajasthan Police for her strict work style and effective policing, has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Police (SP) of Udaipur after a recent administrative reshuffle. With this appointment, she has made history by becoming the first woman SP of the Udaipur district.
Udaipur, a prominent tourist destination as well as a tribal region, faces several policing challenges. As the new SP, Dr. Duhan is expected to focus on strengthening law and order while giving priority to tackling child crimes, trafficking of minors, cybercrime, and other social issues affecting vulnerable communities.
From Medical Career to Civil Services
Born on November 11, 1983, in Rohtak, Haryana, Dr. Duhan initially built her career in the medical field. She completed her MBBS and later earned an MD in Pathology along with a Diplomate of National Board (DNB) qualification.
Before entering the civil services, she worked as an Assistant Professor at BPS Medical College for Women. Despite having a stable career in medicine, she had long aspired to join the Indian Police Service. After the birth of her son, she decided to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
Balancing family responsibilities and studies was challenging, but her determination remained strong. Her efforts paid off when she cleared the UPSC examination in 2016 at the age of 33, beginning her journey as an IPS officer.
Known for Tough Policing and Innovative Initiatives
After joining the Rajasthan cadre, Dr. Duhan served in several districts and gained recognition for her firm approach to law enforcement. While serving as Superintendent of Police in Pratapgarh, she became the district’s second woman IPS officer and implemented various measures to strengthen policing.
During her posting in Jodhpur, she took strict action against criminal networks and played a key role in the crackdown on the gang linked to gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Her fearless approach earned her the nickname “Lady Singham” within the police department.
In Kota, she also introduced a helpline-based mobile application aimed at improving the safety of coaching students. She regularly visited coaching institutes to interact with students and encourage them to stay mentally strong during their preparation. The student safety model initiated under her leadership in Kota was later adopted by several other cities.
Now, as the first woman SP of Udaipur, expectations are high that Dr. Amrita Duhan will further strengthen law and order while launching strict action against child crimes, trafficking networks, and other social challenges in the region.
