New Delhi: India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is making unprecedented strides in the development and deployment of indigenous electronics, vital for the nation’s defence and security. The DRDO’s ongoing mission aims to create and integrate advanced technologies such as radars, seekers, avionics, electronic warfare (EW) systems, underwater sensors, and more into India’s combat and surveillance infrastructure. This initiative is poised to transform India’s defence capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign technologies.
The DRDO’s comprehensive approach involves not only the design of state-of-the-art electronics but also their integration into complete weapon systems and surveillance solutions. This includes rigorous trials, collaboration with industry leaders, and concurrent production efforts. The focus is clear: to ensure that Indian electronics equip Indian platforms, delivering strategic and technological independence while enhancing the nation’s military strength.
Key Developments in Indigenous Electronics
- Electronic Warfare Systems: The Shakti system, an advanced ship-borne electronic warfare suite, was handed over to the Indian Navy in November 2021, bolstering fleet survivability. Additionally, the DRDO has advanced long-range surveillance capabilities with indigenous AESA radars and Long Range Radar (LRR), adding an extra layer of defence.
- Missile Systems: India’s surface-to-air missile systems such as the Akash-NG, Pralay, and Astra, as well as the Rudram-I and Rudram-III, demonstrate the maturity of India’s missile guidance, seeker, and avionics technologies. These systems have undergone successful trials, cementing their role in India’s layered air defence systems.
- Space Security and Naval Warfare: DRDO’s Mission Shakti, which demonstrated hit-to-kill interception in low Earth orbit in March 2019, marked a milestone in space security. Meanwhile, the successful testing of the Varunastra heavy-weight torpedo and the Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system in 2023 further solidifies India’s naval warfare capabilities.
- Counter-UAS and Directed Energy: In an important breakthrough, India recently showcased a 30-kW laser weapon capable of defeating fixed-wing UAVs and swarm drones. This Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system is a significant leap in anti-drone technology, marking a milestone in high-energy laser tracking and beam control.
- Propulsion and Enabling Technologies: DRDO’s innovations also extend to propulsion technologies. The development of the long-duration active-cooled scramjet combustor and solid fuel ducted ramjet (SFDR) for long-range air-to-air missiles underscore the importance of robust electronics in next-generation propulsion systems.
- Indigenous Electronics in Ground and Aerial Platforms: The Main Battle Tank Arjun Mk-IA, integrated with upgraded fire-control and sighting electronics, alongside the successful trials of the Indian Light Tank, showcases DRDO’s focus on equipping land systems with cutting-edge electronics. Similarly, the integration of the Integrated Life Support System (ILSS) for the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas demonstrates avionics-life support integration.
Building a Self-Reliant Ecosystem
The DRDO’s success in advancing indigenous defence electronics is closely tied to its strong collaboration with India’s defence industry. The organisation has identified over 100 systems and subsystems for industry-led development, and it has engaged more than 130 Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPPs). With over 2,000 Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreements signed, the DRDO is expanding its domestic capabilities and fostering the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups in the defence sector.
At the same time, DRDO has opened over 2,780 intellectual property rights (IPRs) to Indian industry, enabling a robust and scalable ecosystem for technology development. Furthermore, the Technology Development Fund (TDF) has supported 81 projects worth Rs 324 crore, driving innovation and industry growth.
Future Focus and Strategic Initiatives
Looking forward, DRDO’s priorities are clear. It aims to continue developing high-reliability electronics across air, land, sea, and space, with a particular focus on mission-proven systems and sovereign supply chains. DRDO is committed to meeting the technology needs of next-generation platforms like the Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (KUSHA), the Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Mk-II, and the indigenous Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems for submarines.
Furthermore, with projects like the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and the next-generation stealth fighter aircraft, DRDO is positioning itself at the forefront of defence technology innovation.
A Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047
The DRDO’s roadmap aligns with India’s vision of becoming a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047. By focusing on cutting-edge technologies like directed energy weapons (DEW), quantum key distribution (QKD), and autonomous underwater systems, DRDO is building the foundation for a self-reliant defence ecosystem. The aim is to ensure that Indian-built electronics not only meet the nation’s current defence needs but also secure India’s strategic interests well into the future.
