The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed 625 appointed observers to familiarize themselves with all electoral processes ahead of the upcoming elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, as well as bypolls across the country. In a comprehensive briefing held on Wednesday, Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and S.S. Sandhu addressed these 625 IAS, IPS, and IRS officers selected to serve as general, police, and expenditure observers.

During the session, the commissioners emphasized the crucial role of these observers as the Commission’s “ears and eyes” on the ground, urging them to ensure transparent implementation of election procedures. They were instructed to remain accessible to all stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and voters, to facilitate timely redressal of grievances.

Commissioner Kumar highlighted the importance of transparency, warning that any complaints regarding observer conduct would be taken seriously. He urged the observers to disseminate their contact information—mobile and landline numbers, email addresses, and places of stay—widely, ensuring that this information is made available on Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and district websites, as well as through various media outlets.

Sandhu further encouraged the observers to use their extensive experience to guide local officials and stressed the need to inspect vulnerable polling stations. He also called for vigilance against the spread of false narratives that could undermine the election process, urging observers to coordinate with district teams to swiftly counter misinformation.

The day-long briefing included comprehensive training on various aspects of election management, with senior ECI officials sharing insights into the Commission’s IT initiatives and mobile applications aimed at facilitating voter participation and improving the efficiency of electoral processes.

As the elections approach, the ECI is committed to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process, with its 625 observers playing a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity of the upcoming polls.
