Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: NTPC Limited has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Électricité de France (EDF) to explore collaboration in developing new nuclear power projects in India. The agreement marks a significant step toward strengthening India’s clean and reliable energy infrastructure.

Framework for Strategic Nuclear Collaboration

The MoU was signed by Arnada Prasad Samal, CGM (Nuclear Cell), on behalf of NTPC, and Vakisasi Ramany, Senior Vice President, International Nuclear Development, representing EDF.

The agreement establishes a framework for both organizations to jointly assess:

  • Feasibility and approach for nuclear project development
  • Suitability of EDF’s EPR (European Pressurized Reactor) technology for Indian conditions
  • Opportunities for localization and large-scale deployment
  • Economic and tariff-related aspects
  • Human resource development through training programs
  • Identification of potential project sites
  • Technical support and collaboration areas

Focus on Clean and Reliable Energy Expansion

The partnership aligns with NTPC’s strategy to diversify into clean and sustainable energy sources. Nuclear energy is seen as a key component in ensuring long-term energy security, providing stable and low-carbon power generation.

Strengthening India’s Energy Security Goals

India is steadily expanding its energy mix to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and meet growing electricity demand. Nuclear power plays a crucial role in:

  • Delivering low-carbon base-load power
  • Enhancing energy reliability and stability
  • Supporting India’s climate commitments

The collaboration between NTPC and EDF is expected to accelerate the adoption of advanced nuclear technologies while promoting indigenous capabilities and localization.

Expanding into New Energy Segments

Beyond nuclear energy, NTPC continues to diversify its portfolio into emerging sectors such as:

  • Renewable energy (solar and wind)
  • Green hydrogen
  • Battery storage and pumped hydro
  • E-mobility and waste-to-energy solutions

This multi-sector approach reflects NTPC’s long-term vision of becoming a comprehensive energy solutions provider.

About NTPC Limited

NTPC Limited is India’s largest public sector undertaking in the energy sector, committed not only to power generation but also to sustainable community development. The company actively implements CSR initiatives focusing on healthcare, education, rural development, and environmental sustainability, creating long-term benefits for communities across India.
