Sambalpur, June 28, 2025 — Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, is all set to increase its annual coal production by 35 million tonnes with the launch of two new opencast mines—Subhadra and Balbhadra—in Odisha’s Talcher coalfield.
New Mines Announced for Talcher Region
The Subhadra Opencast Project will add 25 million tonnes to MCL’s capacity and is scheduled to begin production by FY2025–26. The Balbhadra mine, which will contribute 10 million tonnes, is expected to become operational by FY2029–30. Both projects are named after Subhadra and Balabhadra, mythological figures from Odisha’s cultural history.
Strengthening Regional Operations
MCL already operates across Talcher, Ib Valley, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh, with 18 mines under its belt. Of these, 15 are opencast and three are underground. The two new additions will expand MCL’s footprint in Talcher, joining established sites like Jagannath, Bhubaneswari, Bharatpur, Hingula, Lingaraj, and Kaniha.
FY2025: A Year of Records
In FY2024–25, MCL posted a record production of 225 million tonnes, marking a 9% year-on-year rise. This accounts for 21% of India’s total coal output (1,048 MT) and 29% of Coal India’s overall production (781 MT). Coal dispatches also grew by 6%, reaching 210 million tonnes.
Driving Efficiency Through Technology
MCL has implemented real-time GPS tracking for coal transport and has equipped 98% of its mines with CCTV surveillance. These efforts ensure better transparency and monitoring. With 98% of coal production coming from opencast operations, MCL leads in eco-friendly mining among Indian PSUs.
