Ballia, Uttar Pradesh: In a shocking case from Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, the police have arrested a man who allegedly posed as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and married a woman from West Bengal under false pretenses. The case came to light after the woman became suspicious of the man’s claims and reported the matter to her family.
Man Poses as IPS Officer
The accused, identified as Sudhir Kumar Ram, a resident of Hridaypur village in Ballia, claimed to be a 2021-batch Rajasthan cadre IPS officer. Using this false identity, he convinced a woman from West Bengal to marry him. The marriage took place in March 2025 at a community hall in Kashipur, Kolkata. Believing him to be a genuine IPS officer, the woman’s family reportedly gave Sudhir a dowry that included ₹10 lakh in cash, jewelry, and other items.
Suspicion and Investigation
After the marriage, Sudhir took the woman to his village in Ballia and later moved her to a hotel in Mau district. The woman grew suspicious of his behavior and documents, and upon further verification, discovered that Sudhir was not an IPS officer. She then informed her family, who filed a complaint at Dokti police station in Ballia.
Police Action and Evidence Seized
Following the complaint, the Ballia police conducted an investigation and arrested Sudhir from his home in Hridaypur village. During the arrest, authorities seized police uniforms, fake ID cards, two Aadhaar cards, a lanyard, a badge featuring the Ashoka emblem, and a tablet. The police have registered a case against him for fraud, dowry extortion, and impersonation.
Background of the Victim
The victim, identified as Anushka, is the daughter of Hare Ram from Bansdewa village in Gopalganj, Bihar. She and her family were misled by Sudhir and his accomplices, who provided false assurances about his IPS status and family background.
