Patna: In a significant boost to Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, former IPS officer JP Singh of the Himachal Pradesh cadre joined the party on Friday. Mr Singh, a 2000-batch officer, recently took voluntary retirement while serving as Additional Director General of Police in the Crime Investigation Department. He was slated to retire in July 2027.
A native of Saran district, Singh’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a senior police officer highlights his resilience and commitment to fighting systemic challenges. He studied at a government school in Ekma village, served in the defence forces, and worked with the Airport Authority of India before joining the Indian Police Service.
Prashant Kishor welcomed Singh, saying, “JP Singh is a great example of how a person from Bihar rose after having fought the poor system. His experience and dedication will bring immense value to our party.” Kishor also recalled Singh’s family struggles during the Lalu Prasad regime, when Singh’s father lost his job and moved the family to Benares to secure better education.
Mr Singh expressed his motivation for joining the political movement: “My parents named me Jai Prakash, a great name in Indian history. When I saw Prashant Kishor, who had worked at the UN, leave his comfort zone to work for Bihar, I felt the same pain and urge to contribute to my state.”
Sources say Mr Singh is eyeing a ticket from the Chhapra assembly constituency as he embarks on his political career.
