New Delhi — In a landmark initiative aimed at transforming road safety through cutting-edge technology, ITI Limited, a state-owned telecom and tech solutions company, is gearing up to launch India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered road safety pilot project in Uttar Pradesh. The project is being executed in collaboration with global technology partner mLogica and is supported by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
A Data-Driven Push for Safer Roads
The pilot project aims to harness the potential of AI and Big Data Analytics to tackle rising road accidents and enhance the effectiveness of traffic law enforcement. By processing real-time and historical data from various sources, the system will deliver deep insights into accident trends, risky driving behavior, and road infrastructure gaps.
Key data sources to be analyzed include:
- Traffic flow metrics: speed, congestion, and vehicle volumes
- Environmental factors: time of day, weather conditions, and road surface
- Driver history: violation patterns, training records
- Vehicle data: fitness certifications, registration details
- Crash reports: causes, severity, frequency, and exact locations
- Infrastructure context: type of road, signals, roundabouts, number of lanes, lighting, etc.
Six Weeks to Build a Smarter Transport System
A six-week prototype phase will serve as the testing ground for building and validating AI models that can:
- Pinpoint accident-prone black spots
- Identify core causes of road crashes
- Provide a real-time digital dashboard for policy makers and enforcement officials
The prototype will be rolled out at no cost to the central government, with the Uttar Pradesh state government allocating ₹10 crore from its FY 2025–26 budget to fund the pilot.
Beyond the Pilot: Full Integration Ahead
If successful, the system will be integrated across key functions of the state’s transport system, such as:
- Online licensing and permits
- Automated enforcement via e-challans
- Revenue tracking and optimization
- AI-backed monitoring in the Vahan and Sarathi platforms
- Predictive alerts and fraud detection using AI
The platform is designed to not only respond to incidents but to anticipate and prevent them—marking a shift from reactive to proactive road governance.
Green Light from the Centre
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has reviewed and cleared the project, confirming that it complies with the Motor Vehicles Act and existing regulations. The initiative will also follow strict data privacy and cybersecurity standards throughout its implementation.
Officials Speak
Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh stated that ITI and mLogica have received formal authorization to begin work and will now coordinate closely with the UP government’s transport, enforcement, and IT departments. He described the move as a significant leap in modernizing public infrastructure with AI.
