New Delhi, July 10, 2025 – Addressing the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW), Union Minister Piyush Goyal revealed that India’s installed solar capacity has surged by a staggering 4,000 %, lifting total renewable capacity to 227 GW. He added that India likely became the first G20 nation to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.
From Manufacturing Feats to Carbon‑Neutral Villages
Goyal highlighted immense gains in domestic production—solar module capacity grew 38-fold, and cell production 21-fold over the past decade. He also spotlighted Palli village in Jammu & Kashmir, India’s first carbon-neutral panchayat powered by solar and efficiency measures. Additionally, he pointed to the IESW venue, Yashobhoomi, as a green exemplar—featuring rooftop solar, wastewater treatment, and energy-efficient infrastructure.

Ambitious Clean Energy Schemes in Focus
Supporting rooftop solar and cleaner agriculture, Goyal outlined key schemes:
- PM Surya Ghar Yojana: Rooftop solar for 1 crore households
- PM Kusum Yojana: Promoting solar pumps for farmers
- A PLI scheme to boost production of Advanced Chemistry Cells
- Storage—Key to 24×7 Renewable Power
Goyal stressed energy storage’s pivotal role—batteries, pumped hydro, geothermal, and nuclear—in ensuring round-the-clock clean power. He urged accelerated development of EV charging and battery-swapping infrastructure to support this transition.
₹1 Lakh Crore R&D Fund to Build Self‑Reliance
He unveiled a ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development & Innovation Fund, approved by the Cabinet. This fund aims to rival R&D investment levels in advanced economies, thanks to India’s cost advantage, and will focus on next‑gen battery chemistries, charging infrastructure, supply chain resilience, and full‑value‑chain development from raw materials to recycling.
Reaffirming India’s ambition to reach 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, Goyal quoted Prime Minister Modi: “Ensuring energy security for our citizens is not just a priority but also a responsibility.”
