Kolkata: In a major boost to India’s defence manufacturing capabilities, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has successfully completed sea acceptance trials of the indigenously developed 30mm Naval Surface Gun (NSG), marking a strategic milestone in the shipyard’s evolution from warship construction to advanced weapon manufacturing.
The live firing trials, conducted aboard a GRSE-designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), demonstrated exceptional precision using a state-of-the-art indigenous Electro Optical Fire Control System. The successful performance underscores GRSE’s growing expertise beyond shipbuilding and its potential as a comprehensive defence solutions provider.

This breakthrough has been made possible through a robust collaboration with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) – Hyderabad unit (BHSEL) and international technology partner Elbit Systems Land. The indigenous Naval Surface Gun boasts 60% local content, with expectations for even higher indigenisation in future production cycles.

Prior to the sea trials, the weapon underwent extensive factory-level quality checks and rigorous testing protocols. The system’s high accuracy, reliability, and operational readiness make it a formidable addition to the Indian Navy’s arsenal.
GRSE officials hailed the achievement as a turning point in the shipyard’s strategic trajectory. “With this successful trial, GRSE has demonstrated its capability to deliver not just platforms but also cutting-edge combat systems,” a senior official said.
This development aligns with India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) initiative and bolsters the Indian Navy’s pursuit of technological superiority through indigenous defence solutions.
