Chennai: Senior IPS officer G Venkatraman (IPS: 1994: TN), currently serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Administration in Tamil Nadu, is expected to be appointed as the acting Director General of Police (DGP) for the state. This comes amid delays in the submission of the panel of eligible DGP-rank officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

With the three-month window for submitting the UPSC panel approaching its end, the Tamil Nadu government is likely to opt for an ad-hoc appointment of an Acting DGP, with G Venkatraman being the front-runner for the role. According to sources, the government is expected to dispatch the final panel for UPSC approval in the next few days.

UPSC Panel Delay Forces Ad-Hoc Arrangement

The state government had informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that the process of finalizing the UPSC panel is ongoing. However, with the delay, the government has little choice but to appoint an Acting DGP until the UPSC panel is approved.

G Venkatraman is one of several senior officers being considered for the top position, alongside Seema Agrawal (IPS: 1990: TN), Rajeev Kumar (IPS: 1992: TN), and Sandeep Rai Rathore (IPS: 1992: TN), all of whom are likely to be included in the UPSC panel.

Other DGP-Rank Officers in Consideration

Besides Venkatraman, several other senior IPS officers are being considered for the prestigious post, including:

  • K. Vannia Perumal (IPS: 1992: TN)
  • Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal (IPS: 1994: TN)
  • Vinit Dev Wankhede (IPS: 1994: TN)
  • Sanjay Mathur (IPS: 1994: TN)

While G Venkatraman emerges as the most likely choice, the final decision will depend on the outcome of the ongoing process.

Key Points:

  • G Venkatraman (IPS: 1994: TN) expected to become Acting DGP of Tamil Nadu.
  • The state government has faced delays in submitting the UPSC panel of DGP-rank officers.
  • Other senior IPS officers in contention include Seema Agrawal, Rajeev Kumar, and Sandeep Rai Rathore.
