New Delhi/USAR: State-owned GAIL (India) Ltd. has marked a major engineering achievement with the successful erection of the Product Purge Bin (PPB) in the Polypropylene (PP) Unit of its flagship PDH-PP project at USAR. This milestone underscores GAIL’s growing capabilities in complex project execution and its commitment to driving India’s industrial innovation.
The PPB, a critical component in the gas-phase polymerisation process, serves dual roles: functioning as a resin surge vessel for the extruder and facilitating the recycling of unreacted polypropylene. The bin stands at a towering height of 52.037 meters, with an internal top diameter of 9.144 meters and 4.70 meters at the bottom. Its massive volume of 1,350 cubic meters and structural weight of 381 metric tonnes (MT) — increasing to 875 MT when in operation — reflect the scale of this engineering feat.

What makes this achievement truly historic for GAIL is that the PPB was erected at an elevation of 68.9 meters using a 1600 MT crane — the highest single-equipment lift ever undertaken at the USAR site. Moreover, the entire structure was fabricated on-site, showcasing a remarkable level of precision, coordination, and indigenous expertise.
“This is more than just an equipment installation — it’s a testament to our unwavering focus on engineering excellence, operational safety, and project innovation,” said a GAIL spokesperson.
The successful PPB erection highlights a key milestone in the progress of GAIL’s PDH-PP project, which aims to significantly enhance the company’s polypropylene production capabilities and contribute to India’s self-reliance in petrochemical manufacturing.
