New Delhi: GAIL (India) Limited has marked a major milestone in India’s energy infrastructure with the successful berthing and unloading of its first LNG vessel at the Dabhol LNG Terminal during the monsoon season, following the completion of its ambitious Breakwater Project. The vessel, GAIL Bhuwan, was received on June 2, 2025, by Sandeep Kumar Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director, and Sanjay Kumar, Director (Marketing), GAIL.
With this development, the Dabhol LNG Terminal has officially become an all-weather port — a significant transformation that will enable round-the-year LNG operations, overcoming the seasonal disruption traditionally caused by the Southwest monsoon along India’s western coast.

Located strategically on Maharashtra’s coastline, the terminal has a current regasification capacity of 5.0 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and is a vital part of the country’s gas distribution network through the Dabhol-Bangalore and Dabhol-Panvel cross-country pipelines.
The newly constructed island breakwater – a unique engineering feat distinct from conventional land-connected designs – has enabled this transformation. The project, completed after receiving all required statutory approvals, involved complex marine construction and extensive multi-agency coordination, underscoring GAIL’s capabilities in delivering technically challenging infrastructure.

“The successful completion of the breakwater and the safe receipt of the first monsoon-season LNG cargo mark the beginning of a new era for Dabhol. This terminal now stands ready to contribute more consistently and robustly to India’s clean energy goals,” said Sandeep Kumar Gupta, CMD, GAIL.
The enhanced accessibility is expected to significantly improve vessel scheduling flexibility, operational efficiency, and overall capacity utilization at the terminal. GAIL has also announced plans to expand Dabhol’s capacity from 5.0 MMTPA to 6.3 MMTPA in the first phase over the next three years. Once expanded, the terminal is expected to handle up to 100 LNG cargoes annually.
This development is poised to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s energy security and aligns with the government’s broader push for cleaner and more reliable energy sources.
