New Delhi: GAIL (India) Limited, the state-run natural gas transmission and marketing major, on Saturday reported a gas leakage in its Gauna–Bawana pipeline following heavy rains and flash-flood–like conditions that disrupted the natural course of the Yamuna River in the affected region.
The company confirmed that the unusual river flow and waterlogging led to structural stress on the pipeline, resulting in the leak. Immediate containment and safety protocols were activated.
Pipeline Isolated, No Public Safety Risk Reported
In its official statement, GAIL stated that the affected pipeline segment has been isolated, and gas supply has been stopped through that stretch as a precautionary measure. Internal safety teams have been deployed on-site, and local authorities have been duly informed.
GAIL reassured the public that there is no threat to nearby residential areas. The company said that 24/7 monitoring has been put in place, and the situation is under control.
Access Challenges Delay Repair Efforts
Preliminary assessments revealed that excessive waterlogging and terrain alterations caused by the diverted river flow have made the site inaccessible for immediate physical repair work.
“A team of senior officials and engineers is working continuously on different options to restore the pipeline and resume gas supply at the earliest,” the company noted.
Alternative Supply Routes Being Explored
To minimize any disruption to consumers, GAIL is coordinating closely with downstream stakeholders and industrial clients to explore interim supply alternatives, including route diversions and operational adjustments.
The company emphasized its commitment to maintaining supply continuity and ensuring minimum service disruption during the repair period.
Public and Environmental Safety a Top Priority
The incident, although isolated, has raised concerns about the impact of climate-induced weather anomalies on national infrastructure. GAIL’s prompt action and real-time response demonstrate its focus on safety, risk mitigation, and transparent communication.
Further updates will be provided as restoration progresses and access to the site improves.
